Final Project

Overview
The teaching of holidays that are celebrated across the world result in enhanced cultural respect, critical analysis of the evolution of holidays, and different historical perspectives. As a Language Assistant, teaching holidays from where we come from is usually mandatory in our lesson plans. Some LAs could take the approach to reiterate the basic facts of the holiday that students may have already heard. However, with the help of my final project, I hope LAs can be motivated to think outside the box when it comes to teaching about holidays.
Commercialization of Holidays

English Class:
1st Bachillerato
Spanning three different holidays celebrated in the U.S., as well as some other countries, my final project highlights the evolution of holidays over time. This project discusses how, regardless of place, almost every holiday has changed over time to be more commercialist and capitalistic. Usually originating from religious or spiritual founding, these holidays have lost significance and changed in meaning.
Why This Topic?
I decided to teach about the commercialization of various global holidays because of my background in political science and my interest in how capitalism erodes certain values in our society. I wanted to encourage students, no matter how young, to critically analyze the impact capitalism has on things that have important cultural significance to us.
